Week 2 - Monday

It is kind of funny how the word “culture” in itself is hard to define; its concept encompasses so many things that a single sentence seems inappropriate to give an exact definition. Coming out of class I asked a few friends how they would define a culture, and every single one of them gave me a different answer. Our background gives us notions of what a culture is, or is not. I am wondering if objectivity is even possible in cultural studies.

I love searching through history and going back from effect to cause to find how things work. I had no idea that popular cultural originated from the industrial revolution.
It’s interesting to see that “high culture” took some kind of religious stance against popular culture, having a social goal to redeem the masses and bring them to higher levels of “spirituality”.
I’m wondering if popular culture isn’t playing that role nowadays.
